Glaucoma

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an umbrella term for a group of optic nerve-damaging eye problems. If your optometrist suspects it, there are several vision testing exams that you may undergo. It increases eye pressure and may worsen the longer you have it. Without glaucoma treatment, you may have vision loss and blindness. Risk factors include the following listed below:

  • Family history
  • High blood pressure or diabetes
  • Farsighted vision
  • Eye injury or surgery
  • Over 40 years of age

If you have any of these risk factors, you should talk with our eye doctor about getting tested for glaucoma.

Glaucoma Screening Vision Tests

To, understand if you have glaucoma, it is imperative to be tested by a professional. Our practice has a multitude of different testing methods. Glaucoma testing may include any of the following vision exams:

  • Measuring Corneal Thickness - A small probe that touches your eye and measures the cornea’s thickness.
  • Dilated Eye Test - This test dilates your pupil and shines a light to look at your retina and optic nerve.
  • Angle Exam - Tests the angle where the iris meets the cornea. If there is a blocked drain system here, you may have glaucoma.
  • Optic Nerve Imaging - Once we dilate your eyes, an image of your optic nerve and retina is taken by optical coherence tomography to see each layer in the eye.
  • Eye Pressure Test - The puff test monitors increased eye pressure, one of the most common and known signs of glaucoma.
  • Visual Field Test - This identifies if you’ve lost specific area sight. Done over time, it can map out the progression of your vision troubles.
